Week 10 at USE

As if it were yesterday I remember nervous, but excitedly walking into the building. Now tomorrow, it is my last. This past week comprised of having a Q&A with CEO Danny Meyer, an intern dinner at Blue Smoke, Michilin star barbecue restaurant. Today, I sat in on a managers meeting, one that usually takes place once a week. They discussed the profits and losses over the past quarter, what affected the numbers, and what we, as a company, can do to fix issues, if any. Tomorrow I will present my project in front of many of the higher up executives. The project is a Standard Operating Procedure outline. I am essentially outlining how to do my boss’ job, the USE Manager of Venue Hospitality at Citi Field. Detailing paperwork, how to use certain web applications, who to send what information to whom, as well as other day to day activities. Also, I will be sitting in on a company meeting, discussing with all the different manager heads about anything new in their respective divisions. Then is a farewell activity. I do not know much but the entire staff will be split into teams and compete in certain activities. I believe i learned alot this summer, and will miss all the good times.

Wrap up of week 9

Well, week nine came to a close and i was sent on a business trip. I am up in Saratoga Springs, NY working at the race track for Union Square Events. They have a shake shack, el verona, and a box Frites up here. The company has a house that they rent every summer, being as the track is only open for forty days a year, during the summer. But the attendance of the race track can reach up to forty thousand on some days, as much as a baseball park. Saratoga Springs, New York, is a four hour train trip from New York City, which the company paid for round trip. When the New York Mets are away, the company usually sends the supervisors from Citi Field up to Saratoga to help out.

On the docket for the upcoming week is, I have 3 more days at Saratoga Springs, New York, then I take a train back to New York Citi, one day at Citi Field, then I have to present a presentation to the executives of Union Square Events and Union Square Hospitality Group. Although they are the same company, they are considered different in the eyes of the share holders.

End of 8 at USE

As week 8 comes to a close, all I can  think about is how fast this summer flew by. I enjoyed my time at USE and I am looking forward to the final two weeks. I am on day 8 of my 10 days straight work week and the days are starting to drag, although I am being send on a business trip on August 4th. I am being sent to Saratoga, New York for 4 days and I am looking forward to getting out of the non-stop New York City life for a couple days.

Week 8 at USE

Not much has changed at Union Square. The New York Mets are away so they have me at other venues working. Most recently I was at the Delacorte Theatre in Central Park where we run a fast casual food service restaurant. What makes this different from the last time I worked at the theatre is that now there is an intermission during the play. So we have to stick around for another 3 hours to serve during intermission. The resturant does roughly $1200 during the 15 minute intermission. During the hour and a half wait, IT is my duty to restock the area and see what needs to be refilled.

Week 6 at USE

As the venues I usually work are at Citi field, and the New York Mets are pff fpr twp weeks, Union Square Events (USE) is placing me in different locations for the time being. Earlier this week I was placed at the 9/11 Memorial Museum Cafe, and Public Fare, the venue at the Shakespeare Theatre in Central Park.

Along with a solo project that the company gave me, USE gave all the interns a group project, which was running a field day for the company employees and their young children. 5 weeks of planning later, the day finally arrived today. We had to work within a certain budget to buy games for the children, food for 50 people and alcohol for the people above 21. Needless to say, the water balloon fight was a smashing hit in the 95 degree weather with 85% humidity. Overall, its safe to say that field day 2016 was a success.

Week 5 at Union Square Events

Today, marking the last day of week 5 for me at Union Square Events, we took an intern field trip to a location that one of the interns works at, Terrace 5 at the Museum of Modern Art. We got to eat at the restaurant in house, paid for by the company. The restaurant had a great view of New York City and the Aldrich Rockefeller Sculpture Garden. After we ate, we got a tour of the museum by a tour guide. After the tour was over, I took the hour subway ride to Citi field to work for the night.

Week 4: Union Square Events

As week four wraps up, I cannot to believe it has been a month already. Between commuting to Queens, New York everyday, I am enjoying the tiring and sleep-depriving work. As I work at Citi Field, home of the New York Mets, hours are not ideal, working on a typical day from 2:00 PM – 10:30 PM. On a typical day, I shadow Bill Barnes, the GM of Sports and Entertainment for USE at Citi Field. This includes counting stock daily of supplies, as games are everyday and a typical day, the four restaurants, plus one beverage stand pulls in approximately $70,000 daily. The stock of everything, from food, food supplies, and the serving dishes must be replenished daily so Mr. Barnes, along with me, order new supplies daily, sending out the order by 5 PM, receiving it the next day early in the morning, usually at around 6 AM. One day this past week I was put on warehouse duties, where I arrived at the stadium bright and early, at 5:30 AM and worked an eight hour shift with the warehouse workers. This includes making sure order are correct, analyzing forecasted attendance and deciding how much stock each restaurant needs of each item.
