This week has brought more challenges. First of all southern Michigan was hit by a few storms over the past few weeks. Along with these storms came hail, which shredded a few corn fields, and damaged developing apples. Although most of the damage was in relatively small scattered locations, it was a good reminder of how farmers (and those who work for/with farmers) need to have back up plans and insurance.
When it comes down to it, our food supply is controlled by mother nature who has proven time and again to be unpredictable, ruthless, and sometimes merciful. This explains why most farmers are humble, optimistic, and cautious. This is also something those of us who plan on working with farmers need to keep in mind. These are challenges that we will see continuously throughout our careers.
